It is intended as popular entertainment on mainstream television. Again, the academics agreed that the events shown did have a historical basis but that they weren’t representative of the whole experience – and yes it wasn’t possible to cover the whole war in 4.5 hours! My argument is simple, let’s discuss this fascinating mini-series as a long-form film narrative. The second major issue raised was the depiction of the Poles, Ukrainians and Russians in the film and specifically their treatment of Jews. Its artistic intention is to engage younger Germans in an exploration of what their parents and grandparents might have experienced. Of course, he is right and that’s why the film needs to be discussed as a modern drama, not a historical reconstruction. He also admitted that it was impossible to represent characters from the 1940s in a modern drama in an historically accurate way. Richard Evans, while asserting that the film was not plausible in historical terms, noted that it was as if five young Germans from today had been parachuted into the events of 1941-45. The programme also included some brief interviews with two writers but my main problem with the discussion was that no one was prepared to discuss the film ‘as a film’ and there was no other filmmaker’s voice apart from the producer Benjamin Benedict. The discussion was intelligent and stimulating and the three academics, specialists in this period, historians Richard Evans and David Cesarani and writer/literature professor Eva Hoffman, all expressed their agreement on how well-made and exciting the film was as well as the range of problems it raised in terms of the history of East/Central Europe during the Second World War. This strategy was once fairly common on the BBC after controversial films or television productions but this is the first time (that I can remember) when a foreign language production received this kind of attention. The discussion was chaired by Martha Kearney, a regular presenter of cultural programming on the channel.

I've never done it though.Volker Bruch as Wilhelm, the narrator of the storyĪfter the final episode of Generation War, BBC2 in the UK offered a discussion of the series by three distinguished academics alongside the series producer. Some people experience weakness leaving the body when they watch this, they call it "crying" I guess. I'd say this has to be one of the more emotionally moving films I have ever watched. The Eternal Zero (2013) - a unique film showing Japanese perspective of Kamikaze pilots. old but good! memorable characters, no cgi, real t-34s ect ect. If you watch the shorter or english dubbed version of this your mother will die in her sleep! Don't do it.Ĭross of Iron (1977) - follows a platoon on the ost front. not the most realistic effects and some corny acting, but better than saving Ryan's Privates or the Russian CGI-fest that came out in 2013.ĭas Boot (1981) - THE classic. And real Stug III f/8's were used, "tulta!" Tali-Ihantala 1944 (2007) - An insane amount of historical accuracy went into this film. It follows Finnish soldiers during the Continuation War.

Unknown Soldier (2017) - My absolute FAVORITE newer war film. No CGI! they actually blow up forests! Hell yeah! Talvisota (1989) - a classic depicting the brutal Winter War. ^^^ these are some of the only American made depictions of WWII combat I can actually stand to watch without austically sperging out. Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (yes watch it!) With all these films, always select the longest version with subtitles. I take into account production value along with historical accuracy. Must have been very stressful for the actors.

Some of the ones I watched (years ago) had a lot of original equipment and I remember one movie: they were firing live bullets (with tracers) over the actors’ heads to make some low light battle scenes look more realistic. All of Tarkovskis films are on Mosfilms YT channel (restored, in 1080p, free, with subtitles), and many other Soviet WW2 movies.

The WW2 movie "Ivan's Childhood" from Tarkowski was called "the most lyrical war movie ever made".

Good cinematography is the most important aspect for me when it comes to a movie and I "adore" the films from Ingmar Bergman, Kurosawa and Tarkowski. My favorite war movie is "Paths of Glory" from Kubrick. I watched "Stalingrad" more than 20 years ago, maybe its time to watch it again. The short version is not good, it has just the "action scenes" the quieter, more reflective, atmospheric scenes are in the longer versions. There are some different versions: the longer the version the better (about 5h the longest).
